On May 23rd, during Japan-Tag, I had a small but lovely yukata dressing appointment.
A German woman came to me because she wanted to wear yukata for Japan-Tag in Düsseldorf. She had brought her own yukata and accessories, and my role was to help her wear everything comfortably and beautifully before she went out to enjoy the event.
Since yukata is lighter and more casual than formal kimono, the dressing itself was quite quick. Still, there are a few small details that make a big difference: the position of the collar, the balance of the waist, the shape of the obi, and of course comfort. I had asked her to bring towels beforehand, so I could adjust the body line gently and make the yukata sit better.

For the obi, I tied a hanhaba obi together with a heko obi to create a soft and girly feeling. I like how a heko obi can add volume and playfulness without making the coordination feel too heavy. It gave the whole look a sweet summer festival mood, which felt perfect for Japan-Tag.
Seeing her dressed in yukata and ready to go out made me very happy. I think she was happy too, and that was the most satisfying part for me. Moments like this remind me why I enjoy kitsuke so much. It is not only about dressing someone correctly. It is also about helping someone feel beautiful, comfortable, and a little bit special for the day.

Japan-Tag is such a meaningful day in Düsseldorf, where many people come together to enjoy Japanese culture. Being able to support someone’s experience through yukata dressing felt like a small but precious part of that day.
